Ginger snaps does a great job at portraying a different point of view from your typical werewolf story. In this film the werewolf is a female and as we gets bit she is coming into womanhood as well.
Ginger snaps follows the Fitzgerald sisters who vow to be out by 16 and go together. These sisters are obsessed with death. They take photographs of each other in various death/suicide scenes.
One night they venture out to play a prank on an enemy of theirs. While in the woods, they hear a noise and Ginger disappears. Shortly after, the sounds of Ginger's screams are heard. Bridgette runs towards the screaming and growling to find her sister fighting some creature in the dark.
Bridgette joins the fray as they fight off this creature together. The sisters get to their feet and run for their lives being trailed by this creature. During the chase, the creature is struck and killed by a car.
Which I think is sort of odd because since I was a kid all horror movies say to kill a werewolf you must kill with a silver bullet. So I guess this part of the movie was a little confusing to me just for that reason. Once they arrive back home gingers wounds heal themselves.
Over the course of the next few days, Ginger begins to mutate into a vicious creature, who loves to devour blood and has an appetite for lust. As each day goes by Ginger discovers that her body is not only going through changes from getting her period, she discovers her body starts to grow a tail, growing fur and bleeding uncontrollably. Is it all part of becoming a woman? Or is something far more sinister?
Bridgette tries to discover a cure for her sister and her "virus". On Halloween, Ginger fully becomes a werewolf and begins to kill anything she can get her hands on. Bridgette has finally found a cure thanks to the help of a local drug dealer, but will she use it to save her sister??
Ginger Snaps is a very gory and bloody movie. The special effects as Ginger slowly becomes a werewolf are excellent. Good gore and a well-written story. At the end of the movie you begin to think what would you do if the only person you ever felt connected too and trusted, you eventually had to kill. Would you do it???
