Seen Extreme? Think Again.
While roaming the vendor's hall of the recently held Horror/Sci-Fi Convention here in Sacramento, Ca, I arrive at a table where I see movies. I pick up 2 flicks (Which will be reviewed in the future), and looking for a third. The vendor then points to a movie he has on the table called "A Serbian Film". I pick it up, and take a look. I see the words "Banned In Serbia" across the bottom of the description. The vendor then tells me that it is "Truly A Fucked Up Movie" with emphasis on the word "Fucked". I give it a quick thought, and add it to my stack.
After a little research on the film, I find out it has been banned in a lot more countries than what was listed, and read about how extreme the film is. I then watch.
The story centers on Milos, who after a long career as a Porn Star, gives it up for his wife, and young son. While struggling to make ends meet, he meets up with an old co-star, who informs him that a filmmaker named Vukmir wants him for his new Porn film. After meeting with Vukmir, and being offered a sum of money that cannot be refused. Milos agrees. Vukmir then tells Milos that he will wear a ear piece, and be told what to do as he goes. After not being comfortable with Vukmir's filmming methods and visions, Milos is drugged, and wakes up days with no recollection of anything. He heads to the set of the film where he finds the camera's, and tapes of what was filmed. Milos then discovers the pure horror he was a part of.
"A Serbian Film" had a lot riding on it. Hype. Accolades from the annual SXSW festival, Being another foreign "Shock" flick. As for the hype, it truly lived up to it. The film is extreme, brutal, hard to swallow, and has some of the things that you thought could never be featured in cinema. It makes you feel dirty, and vulnerable. The best things I could say about the film is that it is shot really well, and the actors give a lot in their performances. That's about all on the positive side. "A Serbian Film" takes you to the limit, with all it's blood, sex, violence, and extremities. It's unforgiving, and it is a film that will leave it's mark on you for quite sometime. If you are looking for a film, and have no morals and limits to your watching, then this is for you. If you looking for that new horror film that will blow your mind...Be careful. It may not be a journey you want to take.
