A Little Bit Zombie

The most recent zom-com to be released is A Little Bit Zombie by director Casey Walker.  This is a sub genre that seems to have a shelf life longer than Karo syrup, but while some of the titles leave a bitter taste, this one stands apart.  In this story a group of twenty somethings find themselves in the middle of the woods at a cabin planning a future wedding.  It is during their relaxing weekend they learn of the existence of the living dead.  Fair enough, you’ve heard most of that plot line before, but don’t be so quick to judge and continue reading.

Fans of this sub genre will easily make parallels between this film and past zombie comedy classics, most notably the Evil Dead series.  Not only is the poster for this movie reminiscent of Sam Raimi’s Army of Darkness, so is the humor displayed by lead actor Kristopher Turner.  Turner portrays Steve, the unfortunate victim of zombie DNA trying relentless (and hysterically) to integrate with his own.  Turner resembles a young Bruce Campbell.  As the story’s hapless hero he balances dark slapstick humor with pushing plot effortlessly.  While this type of humor is usually portrayed annoyingly over the top, it’s refreshing to see Turner exercise restraint while doing so.  I guess that is a strong similarity too... well, keep reading...

Many geeks who find their quirky tendencies and wardrobe of button down shirts and dress slacks similar to Steve may be skeptical once they set eyes on his fiance,  bombshell Crystal Lowe.  Nerds don’t usually end up with modelesque fiances, right?  Well, there is much more to Tina than her looks.  While Lowe has an extensive career in the horror genre (such as the remake of Black Christmas) her comedic skills were truly untapped as a funny leading lady until now.  As a female horror fan it is easy to hate the perfect bodied lead actresses, but Lowe’s humorous portrayal of a bridezilla under pressure of the paranormal carves a niche  into my heart.  I just can’t hate her.  That is where this film differs from many who have come before it!

The casting choices and well developed characters set this movie apart from many others that are similar in both genre and storyline.  These characters are extremely likeable as well as memorable.  By the end of this movie you’ll have your own favorites, whether it’s the bitchy and over-protective older sis Sarah (Kristen Hager), or handsome and buff best friend Craig (Shawn Roberts), you’ll surely be cheering on their survival.

Lastly, a nice little touch occurs while the credits are rolling.  In a trend that is mostly seen in superhero films the credits reveal the continuing storyline, so don’t be so quick to think the movie is over!  A Little Bit Zombie is a hysterical take on the zombie comedy genre, and while it’s not all together original it does deliver everything from gore, to dialogue, unique characters, and humor in spades.  From a pun in the title to the humorous end credits, A Little Bit Zombie delivers laugh after laugh.
