After Dark Film’s “Husk” premiered on SyFy this past weekend. Before settling in to take it in, I have to admit, this viewer was a bit skeptical. Would a movie about a scarecrow really creep me out? Would this really be a good horror flick with all the suspense and gore? In a word……yes.
For starters, this isn’t your mama’s “Wizard of Oz” scarecrow. This is more of an evil spirit form the past killing passer-bys, and recruiting these unfortunate souls into his demonic cornfield. Without giving too much away, I will say I did like the way the characters evolved. When one of the main characters, Brian’s, girlfriend, Natalie falls victim to the scarecrow, he goes a bit insane and even resents his friend Chris for not saving her. First off, these characters have that humanity that many in horror films lack….this is also what makes the audience identify with them, thus it makes it more horrifying. Also, the tension between the friends trying to survive leaves the audience in suspense for if they are going to turn on each other.
In terms of blood and gore, “Husk” has it. There is plenty of blood and demented scenes of people hammering nails through their fingers to hold any horror fans attention. To sum it up, “Husk” is one of the better movies you’ll see on cable. If you see it on, definitely watch it or DVR. It won’t be a waste of time, and probably one of the better “scarecrow” movies you’ll see.
