Imagine your waiting for the subway, it’s a normal morning, maybe your enjoying your morning cup of coffee while you wait. Then suddenly 54
schoolgirls take hands and jump in front of the approaching subway. Pretty fucked up way to start your day right?
That’s exactly how the
Japanese film, Suicide Club, starts out; it’s a brutal scene a lot of blood
and bone crushing sound effects.
After the schoolgirls commit suicide, the police
investigate and come across a nurse that killed herself the same night using a mysterious white bag. A white bag is also found at
the scene of the subway suicides. The bag contents are even more terrifying than the
suicides. Inside the bag is a spiral web of human skin sowed together.
It turns out the skin pieces are from the individuals of the suicides. But
how can that be??
The cops get a phone call from a hacker who calls
herself “The Bat”; she has discovered a disturbing website containing
white and red dots. After a day or so she makes the connection that these
dots coordinate with the recent suicides. The red dots represent the girls,
and the white dots represent the boys.
Throughout the movie we see
an all girl band on TV. The band is called Dessert , and they sing a song entitled “Mail Me”
which is translated to “Call Me” this is important to remember.
After
another mass suicide, everyone is convinced there is a Suicide
Club. Finally someone makes the connection of this girl group, Dessert, and the mass
suicides that have been going on.
This film asks you are you connected to
yourself??? It is a question you will be thinking of for awhile.
Suicide Club isn’t your typical horror film, this is quite different. It takes a cold harsh look at society’s youth and
how much of an impact pop culture affects and can manipulate youth in
today’s society.
