Waterfront Nightmare interview with Jason Whittier

“Waterfront Nightmare” is a psychological/horror movie, in which seven college friends spend their spring break in a remote waterfront cabin only to discover that their lives are in jeopardy. The partying stops when they each start disappearing one by one.

We caught up with writer/director, Jason Whittier, to talk about Waterfront Nightmare.

Horror News Network:   “Waterfront Nightmare” revolves around a group of college friends who go up into the middle of nowhere to party for Spring Break. Can you give us a bit of insight on how the plot develops?

Jason Whittier: The seven college friends go to the cabin to party by themselves for spring break. Upon arrival, they realize they are secluded from civilization except for a small town. With three locals (cabin owner, liquor store owner, and pizza delivery man), three Goth's from the neighboring cabin, and a man filming them, something just doesn't feel right. The film takes place over three nights and four days. The first night they all party and the first killings start. By the second night they start to worry. By the third night, it's run for your lives.

Horror News Network:   Is this a story you’ve been scripting for years? What was the inspiration?

Jason Whittier: I wrote the script last summer (2010). Pre-production began last September and we shot in July-August. My inspiration came from a trip I took my senior year of college at West Virginia University. I took a spring break trip with my 12 of my friends to a remote cabin in West Virginia, and felt it had the makings of a horror movie. My wife and I were driving in the car one day from Georgia to Massachusetts, and we started talking about it. Next thing you know, I was writing the script.

Horror News Network: Were you influenced by any of the “teen slasher” movies of the 70’s and 80’s?

Jason Whittier: I've watched horror and read horror stories ever since I can remember. I used to read "Goosebumps", "Fear Street" and the underrated books by Christopher Pike. "I Know what you did last summer", "Scream", "Fear", "Cabin Fever", and many other horror movies have influenced me in my writing and making of "Waterfront Nightmare" as well as my next project ("Crazed").

Horror News Network: Describe the characters a bit for us? How do they evolve, and pretty much navigate the situation once it becomes gruesome?

Jason Whittier: Kelly, Alyssa, Emma, James McBurney, Chris, Jackson, and Mark are all friends. Kelly is your sweet and innocent girl next door. Alyssa is emotional, moody, and a bit of a bitch. Emma is the outgoing and promiscuous one of the group. McBurney is laid back with the guys, but has a bit of a temper. Chris is the funny guy of the group. Jackson is the protective jock, while Mark is the friendly guy who tries to please everyone. Seth and Brad are two local buddies. Seth is the local liquor store owner and Brad is the local pizza delivery man. Old Man is the cabin owner and JT is the guy who stalks the group of college friends. Three Goth's (Hannah, Rob, and Adam) come to party with the college friends the first night.

Horror News Network: What’s the back story to your killer?

Jason Whittier: I wish I could tell you, but then I would give away the killer in a second and ruin the ending. "Waterfront Nightmare" is a thriller and will leave you guessing until the killer is finally reveled to the audience, but not to the characters still alive.

Horror News Network: For hardcore horror fans, what can they expect in terms of brutality, and actually being scared?

Jason Whittier: Our killer uses a hatchet, sledge hammer, scythe, and a knife for his killings. Our director (Clark Birchmeier) went with a stylized approach to all of the killings. It is simply amazing. There is a decent amount of gore, but nothing over the top. Much of the suspense is from the unknown and what the audience doesn't see as well as what the characters don't see. Much of the suspense is for the anticipation of something to happen as well.

Horror News Network: Is there a release date / plan for the film yet?

Jason Whittier: Next year (2012). We will be hitting the festival circuit spring to fall. We'll have a premiere in the next few months in Michigan as well.

Horror News Network: In the spirit of the season, what’s  your favorite horror movie / thriller?

Jason Whittier: It would have to be between "Identity" and "The Exorcist". There's just too many good ones and too many that need to be made...

Horror News Network: Where can horror fans learn more about “Waterfront Nightmare”?
