Fog Warning interview with Cuyle Carvin
A small New England town is rocked by a vampire scare. Many people have been murdered and their blood has been sucked. Ronny, manager of a local comic book store, who is house-sitting at a future historical site, decides to kidnap a woman who he believes is with Satan. He locks her up in the attic of the historical home. He's joined by two thugs, Karl and Eddie, who enjoy tormenting the woman. All they need is her confession which Ronny can record with his digital camcorder. However, their guest begins to alarm her hosts with some very strange behavior. Soon their dreams of becoming rich and famous turn into a violent nightmare.
We caught up with actor, Cuyle Carvin, to talk about Fog Warning.
Horror News Network: The premise of “Fog Warning” is great. For the most part, it’s not fantasy, it’s based in reality with just everyday people caught up in this bizarre predicament. How did you become involved in the film?
Cuyle Carvin: I had worked with director Christopher Ward on his film Person of Interest and we had a good working relationship because of that film. When he started production on Fog Warning and mentioned it was a new kind of Vampire film, i told him I just had to be a part of it. Horror films are my favorite genre of films, both to watch and act in. Chris indulged me and let me audition for Fog Warning and I remember wanting the part so bad so there was no way I wasn't going to go in and kill the audition, pun intended. Apparently i did a decent enough job and won the part of Karl.
Horror News Network: Describe your character, Karl,” as he appears to be the more grounded “kidnapper”? Also, describe the relationship between “Karl’ and “Ronny”?
Cuyle Carvin: Karl is a mean bastard. Generally speaking, he lives his life on the outskirts of the law and he's been around the block enough times that he knows how to live in the shadows. Of the three thugs who do the kidnapping, Karl is the most real and logical thinker in terms of the actual act of kidnapping and knowing the ramifications of doing so.
Karl and Ronny go together like mentos and coca cola. Put them together and you'll get a helluva viral reaction. They both happen to be mutual friends of Eddie and Eddie is the only reason they're stuck in the same place. For the sake of the mission and loftier goals, Karl deals with Ronny but thinks he's an idiot. Without giving too much away, there are a few times where Karl and Ronny butt heads and it does eventually come full tilt. Although Ronny certainly takes his part in the terrorizing, he has a good heart and good intentions. Karl does not.
Horror News Network: Being as if “Anna” turns out to not be a vampire, you’re kidnappers, and if she is, she can kill you…how does “Karl” evolve during this no win situation?
Cuyle Carvin: Well, I can't say too much here but Karl has something up his sleeve that only he knows about and carries through the film. Karl has a plan no matter what happens and he's fearless either way.
Horror News Network: Without giving too much away, what can horror fans expect? More blood and gore? Or more suspense?
Cuyle Carvin: Great question. In the words of the director Chris Ward, 'Love it or hate it, Fog Warning is completely original.
That's what I really liked about the script. It definitely is a new spin on horror films and certainly the Vampire genre films. There's an intelligence and intrigue in the story and characters that you don't often find in horror films, or especially indie horror films.
Fog Warning has a nice mix of the blood and gore we all like but there's also plenty of suspense throughout the film.
Horror News Network: You’ve appeared in a few other horror films (“Sasquatch Assault” and “The Last Day”). How does “Fog Warning” match up?
Cuyle Carvin: Fog Warning is quite different than most horror films I've been in as it doesn't fit into the generic 'mold' of a horror film. For reasons that I stated before. I can't really compare it with other horror films I've been in directly because they're all so different than each other. Sasquatch Assualt is great too but it's intentions as a film and product are just very different than Fog Warning.
Horror News Network: You’re also heavily involved in with a few charities. I have to ask about the “Cuyle Carvin Coloring Book”? Are there any vampires in there?
Cuyle Carvin: Hahaha. Nope, no vampires in the coloring book. Perhaps there will be in the follow up 'Cuyle Carvin Crossword and other Bathroom Games Book'.
Horror News Network: It looks like your next project is a film “Good2BeCrazy.” Tell us a bit about that?
Cuyle Carvin: Actually, Good2BeCrazy was a play I just finished up in Hollywood. It went really well and was well received. My latest project is a film called TERMINAL LEGACY (2012) which is a sci-fi action thriller about an apocalyptic event. I play a scientist who creates a miracle drug that has the potential to cure any and all disease or affliction. Chaos ensues when the drug is tested on humans. I'm looking forward to seeing this, there were a lot of talented people on this film, in front and behind the camera.
Horror News Network: In the spirit of the season, what’s your favorite horror movie /thriller?
Cuyle Carvin: That's always THE toughest question - there's just too many. I really love The Ring, The Last Exorcism - some might disagree but I think the Paranormal Activity films are quite good. For the indie low budget horror films - I love SICK and Satan's Little Helper, among many others.
Horror News Network: Where can our fans get more information on or a copy of “Fog Warning”?
Cuyle Carvin: Fog Warning is being released on iTunes on Halloween. It will probably be available through more venues in the future too but for now the initial release will be on iTunes. October 31, 2011 - make sure you see it!
The trailer is at www.FogWarningtheMovie.com.
