Mangrove Slasher part 2 interview with Haitz and Potter

Lurking in the mangroves, just beyond the swamps, at the edge of the coast, lives a shadowy figure hell bent on ruining everyone’s good time. His method..A machete. His reasons..We may never know. MANGROVE SLASHER 2 is the story of a wild, partying group of friends and the man who is determined to finish them off one by one. Shot entirely in the Sarasota area by director Sean Haitz, MANGROVE SLASHER 2 is a tour de force of absurdism, a comedy that exploits horror and B-movie clichés to maximum effect.

We caught up with filmmakers, Sean Haitz and Chris Potter, to talk about Mangrove Slasher 2.

Horror News Network: How did you guys come up with the concept for this movie?

We've always been fans of horror movies and had wanted to make a film for a while, so we decided to just go for it and see what happened. The concept came from our resources and surroundings. Sarasota has a few things that are somewhat unique, the #1 beach in the world, Mangrove littered coastlines, etc. We tried to take advantage of what we could utilize for free. With a budget as deep as our own pockets (not very deep, that is), these resources came in handy. So, we created a killer from the Mangroves.

Horror News Network: Can you tell us a bit about the main characters in the film?

We tried to fill the movie with campy 80's cliches, so we had the stereotypical Jocks, Cheerleaders, a solitary Nerd to be picked on. Most of the other characters came out of improvisation or necessity. Pavo, and quasi-polish, drug dealing grease ball was invented to fill a roll when another actor ducked out. Others were just created spur of the moment, and utilized our crew, or ourselves to get more bodies in the film. Certain characters, like Jack Ripper were actually in the script, and were more thought out. The actor that plays the Killer, Ricky Svec was actually used in a couple scenes as a filler body.

Horror News Network: What can we expect from this film in terms of blood and guts?

You can expect to see blood, guts and boobs. Some of the kill scenes are more serious, and some are light-hearted and meant to spoof the genre, i.e. a girl getting her breast hacked off, and simply stating, "Oh my God, you cut of my tit!"

Horror News Network: Can you talk a bit about the special effects in the movie?

Digital special effects were kept to a minimum. We used copious amounts of fake blood, and a few of our own tricks to get arterial spray.

Horror News Network: What proved to be the most difficult while creating this movie?

Getting actors to show up (it was all volunteer) and making sure we had everything we needed for each scene. We ran out of blood and digital video memory multiple times.

Horror News Network: Where can our readers find out more about Mangrove Slasher 2?

Facebook, FacedProductions.com, and Twitter.

Horror News Network: In closing, what would you guys like to say about Mangrove Slasher 2?

It turned out to be quite a challenge, but it has been completely worth it the entire way. We made the film in a style that would allow for errors we knew we would encounter, but what we learned along the way has been invaluable. We are excited to have produced a film that has received so many positive reviews and acclaim from both friends and strangers alike.
