Doll Boy interview with Billy Pon
When a brutal daylight massacre leaves them bound and gagged in a remote, abandoned warehouse, eight young West Texans soon realize their minutes are numbered.
We caught up with writer/director Billy "Bloody Bill" Pon to talk about Doll Boy.
Horror News Network: Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you became involved in making films?
Billy Pon: I've been designing and building Haunted Houses most of my life. Thanks to my dad who passed his love for all things horror to me I figured Haunted Houses would be a great way to show off some ideas.I also work in television. I've been writing and producing local television commercials and news promos for a day job. I knew since an early age I wanted to make Horror Movies and figured if I got my foot in the door at a TV station I would actually get paid to learn and to hone my craft at the same time.
Horror News Network: How did you come up with the concept for Doll Boy?
Billy Pon: Doll Boy is actually a side character from a feature script I wrote entitled "Circus of the Dead". Before I do "Circus" I wanted to shoot a short to see how it came out. You know, kinda "get my feet wet" so to speak. Now the story behind Doll Boy is... (world exclusive) he is a man-made monster. These clowns in "Circus of the Dead" make their own "side show freaks" and Doll Boy is one of their favorite ones. He was a pedophile ice cream man who the clowns tortured and cut his stuff off. They now use him as the "Baby-sitter" when called upon. There's a lot more just as demented characters sprinkled throughout "Circus of the Dead". Including the large clown who had a cameo in "Doll Boy", Noodledome.
Horror News Network: Can you talk a bit about Doll Boy’s mask? Who made it, etc?
Billy Pon: The mask was made at Death Studios. Sergio (Doll Boy) found the mask and wanted me to help with a costume. He wanted a dirty jumpsuit like Michael Myers or Jason but I thought, we can do something a little different than that. I guess you can say Doll Boy and AC/DC's Angus Young have lots in common!
Horror News Network: One of the coolest things about the movie is the style that it was shot in. Whether it was Doll Boy walking across the movie projector screen or barreling through doors, the film delivered a horror filled, yet artsy type of feel. Can you talk a bit about that?
Billy Pon: Since Doll Boy was the first "real" project I tackled I wanted to really do my best to make it not look amateurish. So with that said I brought in Eddie Garcia to shoot it and I told him I had some crazy ideas and that they might be a little dangerous to pull off. So i sent him up a lot of 30 foot ladders, made him lay in some still unknown sludge and made him run a mere marathon to make the shots look right. For the record he bruised every bit of both arms and fell at least 3 times and never complained once, a bad-ass in my book!
Horror News Network: Can you tell us about the actors of the film? How did they get involved in the movie, what are their backgrounds, etc?
Billy Pon: We had a professional casting call here in Odessa, Texas... or at least as professional as you can get in Odessa. We had a great turn out and chose the people who I thought could not only act but actually remind me of someone who might be abducted from a coffee shop and thrown in to an abandoned Tex-Mex Flea Market. Venus was an up and coming actress to be. As a matter of fact she landed the lead role in a feature after filming "Doll Boy". I bet she'll be big someday! Raul and Adrienne were first timers who rose to the challenge and made me very proud. Shawn was also a first timer who I think the acting bug bit hard. I'll bet we see a lot more from him soon. Heather and Dominic were wonderful and my only regret was killing them off so early. I'm gonna make it up to them someday! As for Jed, geez! His character is such a jerk that after screenings I always find myself defending him and saying, "in real life he's a really nice guy, I swear". A good sign for great acting if you ask me. You will also find out what happens to Jed's character in "Circus of the Dead". As for the kiddos they were all troopers. Angelina had to lay still on the nastiest mattress I've ever seen. Drake aka "Franken-Boy" had a blast running through the cluttered hallways. Last but not least was little Sammie. If her crying when the van door slammed didn't move you in some way then you must not have watched the movie.
Horror News Network: What impressed you the most with Sergio Gracida’s portrayal of Doll Boy?
Billy Pon: Sergio told me before I ever started filming... "Bill, I'm gonna tear it up for you!" And did he ever. I had him carry a real sledge hammer around all day and all night while shooting because I wanted it to look like it was an extension of his body. When it called for him to come crashing through walls it was truly a performance to witness in person.
Horror News Network: When and where can readers get their hands on the DVD?
Billy Pon: I will be selling the DVDs in October 2011 at my website. bloodybill.com
Horror News Network: What are your plans for the movie now that you have a short? It seemed to get rave reviews across the board.
Billy Pon: Words can't describe how good it feels to have good reviews. I watched so many horror movies growing up that to have comments saying I'm a fresh throwback to those movies, it's just crazy to me. I believe Hollywood needs some fresh ideas and some new killers. No more remakes!!! As far as future plans for "Doll Boy", you'll have to watch "Circus of the Dead" and find out what happens.
Horror News Network: Where can our readers find out more about you and your upcoming movies?
Billy Pon: My home website, bloodybill.com. "Circus of the Dead" is next and then possibly "Mister Fister". Fister was for the Hobo with a Shotgun Fake Movie Trailer Contest. I've gotten hundreds of request begging for that to be made. Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vebhffdgC70
Horror News Network: In closing, what would you like to say about Doll Boy?
Billy Pon: Doll Boy is what started it all. It showed me and my writing partner Lee Ankrum that if we think it, we can make it. Doll Boy is just the beginning!!!
