American Horror Story - The Good The Bad and The Weird - Episode 5

by: Chuck Collinge

My apologies in advance, my personal schedule has had a shift in priority ever since the stars were right and almighty Cthulhu shat upon the Northeast US. We just left off at a dramatic climax, and let's go right back into Halloween night.

The second half here feels like a chance to breathe after what has happened, and we get to slow down and figure out what happened. So with that in mind, here's:

Spoilers ahead:

The Good

The change in pace is very nice. I like that there is a good chance to breathe here, after, well everything that happened. Zachary Quinto continues to be amazing. It's easy to understand his plight. He seems to be one of the few people who really tried to make things work, and just now finally lost it. That said, his destructive wrath is that of a teenage boy with the pumpkins and the carefully positioned skeletons.

The Harmons this time around were actually pretty decent. Ben is thankfully tired of ghost Hayden, slamming the door in her face in his without even caring if she's alive or not. Vivian is tired of Ben, because he's the main reason they're stuck in their shit situation, also everything he has done so far.

Constance and Violet, I do like what they had together, and that they reached an understanding. Constance however, bore the weight on the main exchange, and she does grief very very well. I mean, this is all very soapy, but it works with her. Violet was more about learning that there is some weird shit with Tate, but more on that later.

The Bad

Fine, I stopped enjoying Larry here. He had no reason to be in this two parter, other than to declare that he wanted money. However, I like that he knows what's going on, and mocks Ben for not fucking getting it by now. That said, he knows the people he killed and burned are going to be there, and be around. Shouldn't he be staying the fuck away from here?

Guess who else has no reason to be here. Hayden being here is more of an obligation to the world than any actual story. Also, apparently all the female ghosts think in layers of rage and lust that makes someone with severe bipolar say calm down. But back to Hayden. Her character is all over the board, and never in a mood that works well with the scene. She didn't need to be in the show to realize Ben is an asshole, and Vivian has had enough.

The Weird

PUPPYSPLOSION! That's all I have to add there. Also, I really don't think those were tomatoes. A ghost puppy makes all the sense in the world here.

I like the security guy, but given that he represents safety and benevolent forces in the world here, it's more about waiting for him to die. I'm sure that will happen, as I'm sure every other enjoyable or protective character in any other horror story will be killed.

I get Tate's story, and that he is a prick because he committed the school shooting that everyone but him and the clueless Harmons know about. I also understand that the group bullying him have every right in the world to torture him for doing what he did, but out of context, they kinda act like they might have deserved it. I'm not saying they did, but they're giving him crap in the way a bully would a geek before a geek cracks and decides to shoot up a school while looking like a particular model. Still, I'll bet we're close to seeing them all die one by one, I'm going to guess for no real reason other than being in the wrong place in the wrong time.

Also, everyone else in this show is fucking dead. And they all know each other, and hang out. Do you think they have little ghosty parties? I think so. They make little ghostie cliques, the horny ghosty men fuck all the ghosty lusty women and the non horny people gossip. They live in an alternate Big Brother universe. Though, if the show goes at it's current pace, there will be more people in the house than in a Walmart on Black Friday.

This was an alright part two overall. I wouldn't even consider it to be a two parter. It feels more like an episode to collect your thoughts from the first part and have you adjust to the show's normal pace.
