American Horror Story - The Good The Bad and The Weird - Part 4
by: Chuck Collinge
Part one of the Halloween two parter. I'll start by saying that this was a well done first half. Even if there isn't a specific part two and they just continued, this would be a fine episode.
Spoilers ahead:
The Good
There was a lot of good in this one. I really enjoyed most of the cold kill starter. Zachary Quinto did a great job as Chad, an estranged partner forced to power through their poor investment, and again as a fluffer (please tell me I wasn't the only one thinking of a different type of fluffer when the annoying realtor said that). He plays doesn't get too soap opera, which is a pretty welcome change here, even though he gets pissed toward the end.
Constance and Addie were amazing this time. They showed a good amount of history and explored their dynamic a bit more. I liked the fights about Addie's pretty girl costume, and how each one came to a desire. Addie, when in makeup, was adorable despite looking a borderline preteen who found her first makeup kit. Constance's solution of Addie having a pretty girl costume made of what I think is a blow up doll mask, was sweet in one way, but still controlling, as hiding Addie's look is the only way she can be considered pretty.
Then the hit and run. This was probably the biggest gotcha scare the show has had so far, and it earned it. Addie was the sweet spot, well is, the sweet spot of the show. Constance again was very swept and really ran with her grief. She really chews the damn scenery while dragging Addie's body over to the house ground. It's bittersweet that while she's dead, she will get to be forever with her friends in the house she loves, but it may only be a matter of time before she is swallowed by the darkness of the house. But all that said, why the fuck don't the paramedics stop her? They should be saving a fucking girl's life, and making sure some grieved nutter isn't doing more damage.
Then there is the one small scene for old Moira, where she finally gets to visit her mother on the one day the dead can roam free. This scene is amazing in that you come in knowing little of her, even less of her mother, and yet they are still able to tell a very small, very sweet story in a few words and expressions. Kudos.
The Bad
There's a pattern here. Somehow, magically, anytime Tate and Ben are on the same screen, it somehow comes up here. It's obvious that Ben is falling apart, and I feel sorry for him, but he just digs himself into his own damn grave while continuing to tell himself “Dig up, stupid.” Of all the people in the world to have a heart to heart with, and to whom you would show your troubles, your breakdown, your fears, it's the kid ready to bone your daughter, who is also the kid you are trying to get rid of. How? How the hell does that ever go into anyone's mind as a good idea?
And there's Tate, who may be the gimp who killed Chad and Patrick, and fucks and or kills everyone. I'm truly hoping there is a point where we see his backstory and understand why his existence, with or without rubber, is in any way relevant to the story. Or see if he is going to try to be Zombie boy again, or a rubber fetish model, or even try to be Andrej Pejic or some new outside culture model.
American Horror Story is showing another sad trend. Everyone in this show other than the Harmons is dead. The kids egging the house, the fluffer, the partner who tried to fluff Ben, the maid, everyone, is dead and here for no real reason.
The Weird
We have a new word, and a new holiday tradition I believe we should all celebrate thanks to sunburned Russel Edgington: Halloweek. Let us all celebrate by trick or treating for extortion money! This was a nice scene, and I'm more interested in how Violet will react.
Also, Dead Hayden returns from the dead on All Hallows Eve! My reaction is essentially the same as Ben's when he sees her. A look of shock, then slam the door in her face because there is better shit to care about here.
We also get to see more of Dr. Charles Montgomery's history. Last week I got confused and didn't realize he was running a back alley abortion clinic. My apologies, but they make it very clear in this one. We also get to understand what the doctor has been doing with the remaining parts, while he copes with the loss of his child. This is the only part of the episode that felt like a blatant cliffhanger, since we already know it's going to end in something horrible happening in the basement, but just don't know why yet.
Vivian was pretty damn good here when trying to bring things back to normal and getting Chad and Patrick to fuck off. The ER room at the end however, that is pretty trashy, but it will be neat to see Rosemary's Baby in the House on Haunted Hill.
The first part of the Halloween episodes is very strong, and has me interested in the show again with most of the energy I had from the pilot. While the weakest point is still the family living in the house, almost everyone else is strong enough to keep my interest afloat. Anyone else ready for part two, or are you giving up to plan your own Halloweek?
