Double Take: A look at remakes

By: Melissa Frolich

Every year Hollywood continues to take good movies from your childhood and turn them into crap. A lot of remakes consist of B-Movie fare from the late 70’s and early 80’s, but those original movies achieved cult status and were quite entertaining.

I remember seeing the original Hills Have Eyes when I was around 10 years old and thinking “Sure, it’s kind of a hokey story, a family of cannibals that terrorizes a family, but damn was it a good movie though.”

A few years ago I attended a horror festival and had the pleasure of meeting Michael Berryman, one of the original cast members in the Hills Have Eyes movie.

We spoke for a while about the many movies that Hollywood has remade. I asked Michael about his thoughts on the Hills Have Eyes. Michael told me flat-out that he “Did not enjoy the movie and was especially repulsed by the crude and very long rape scene in the movie.”

In the original Hills Have Eyes, Pluto and Mars raped Brenda before they steal the baby. Hollywood decided to include the scene in the remake except they made it more violent.

Hollywood has been remaking movies for as long as they have been making movies. Yet in the past couple of years it seems like every horror movie I grew up on has been remade or is in the process of being remade. Even Pet Sematary is in line for a remake.

Let’s look at what makes a great horror movie. Of course a great story, to some degree the special FX as well, but the main ingredient is the cast.

These days it is very difficult to find a cast that can make a film as good as the original. Good luck finding a child that can scare the living daylights out of you as good as Miko Hughes aka Gage Creed did in Pet Sematary.

For those of us that have grown up on horror, it’s sad to see an industry that was once very inspiring, sinking. Yes, there are the occasional few films that have come out that are very good and have been very inspiring to us hardcore horror fans, yet I can’t help but think what’s next?
